How the time is worked out

Reading time = pages × words per page ÷ words per minute. We assume 275 words on a typical paperback page; large type and generous margins hold fewer, dense non-fiction more, so the page-density setting changes it. The default speeds are the averages found by a 2019 review of 190 studies of adult silent reading in English: 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction.

To find your own speed, read for exactly five minutes, count the words on one full page, multiply by the pages read, and divide by five.
